Shawe hosted South Ripley in an ORVC game, they came out on the wrong end of the win column but the highlight of the night was Senior Philip Kahn scoring 49 pts, which surpassed the previous school record set in 1975 by the late Frank Armstrong.
Coach Dan Hambrick had this to say about the game
Shawe got off to a rough start getting down 17-0 to a very good South Ripley team. They kept battling and cut into the deficit, but in the end Ripley wore the Hilltoppers down. “I am so proud of the way the boys battled the rest of the game. We may have lost by 16 after starting in the major hole but we fought hard all night and I am proud of them for that. This is a great group and we have our main goal ahead of us.
Shawe out scored the talented Raiders 62-61 after that initial run.
The Toppers worked hard to get going and made a run, but we’re still down 15 at half 38-23. The final score was 78-62. “We couldn’t string stops together tonight,” said Hambrick.
The Toppers struggled early, but Senior guard Philip Kahn was hot most of the night. “Philip had an absolute phenomenal game having 49 points which broke the school record of 44 points (1975) by the late Frank Armstrong,” added Coach Hambrick. (Claire Higgins holds the Lady Topper record with 46)
South Ripley tried a number of defenses and different players, but couldn’t slow him down. Kahn was hot from inside and out as he hit 7 3’s on the night.
“To get 49 points against South Ripley, one of the best teams on our schedule, is just off the charts great.
He is the kind of player every coach dreams about having. He is very humble, is a hard worker and is a leader in so many ways. I am happy for him and I know after coaching him for 4 years that he wants to win more than anything,” said a proud Coach Hambrick. Braiden Smith had 9 points for the Toppers. “We know we are at our best when Braiden and Philip are scoring together. That is when we are most dangerous.”
“We will get to work because we have a busy weekend ahead of us, said Coach Hambrick”
