(Connersville, Ind.) – The Connersville High School Wrestling Program has lost a man who has not only made a great impact on his wrestlers but the community as well.

Shortly after midnight on January 1, wrestling coach Steven “Mac” Taylor was killed in a tragic accident. Further details on the accident have not yet been released as the incident is still under investigation.

Taylor was in his sixth season as head coach of the Spartans wrestling team, where many of his former athletes thought of him as more of a mentor than a coach.

Former wrestler, Blake Beaver told the Connersville Examiner, “I met Mac in a time in my life when I really needed a friend and he was just that. He was more than just a coach, he cared for each and every wrestler like we were his own. He taught us more than just wresting.”

In addition to being a coach, Taylor enjoyed spending time with his wife and two daughters and riding his motorcycle.

“In six years, we’ve only been apart about 20 days,” wife Ashlee Gordon wrote on Facebook, she went on to write, “You showed our girls how they should be loved and treated by anyone.”

The Connersville Examiner wrote “To all who knew him, Mac was a teacher. Whether it was reversals, takedowns, or how to live a rich life outside of the gym, the 43-year-old provided plenty of lessons, many of them by example.”

The Connersville High School Athletic Department tweeted a quote from Taylor talking about his 1996 National High School record with 221 wins, saying “I believe in hard work. The kids in today’s society don’t necessarily get the fact that if your work hard, good things will come from it. That’s what I am preaching to them, and the other thing is confidence in yourself.”

To say that he will be greatly missed is an understatement, but Taylor left behind a legacy that will be remembered by many for years to come.
