U.S. 421 New Road Construction Project Moves Forward

Project 421

The environmental assessment required by the National Environmental Policy Act has officially completed for the U.S. 421 New Road Construction Project and The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI).

As a result, INDOT will continue development activities - including real estate acquisition - to advance this project toward construction of the preferred alternative number six, an at-grade alignment. Construction is anticipated to take place 2019-2020.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) held a public hearing on Tuesday, February 20 of this year for the project where it presented the preferred alternative. Public involvement is an important element of the decision-making process. The hearing provided an opportunity for INDOT to keep the community informed of and engaged in project developments.

Project 421 is the study of the half-mile section of U.S. Route 421 through Madison that approaches the Milton-Madison Bridge, which spans the Ohio River between Madison and Milton, Ky. The purpose of the project is to select a route that best addresses the safety concerns, mobility challenges and economic development needs of Madison.
