THE CITY OF MADISON WELCOMES CHRIS HALE AS THE NEW DIRECTOR OF STREETS, FACILITIES AND SOLID WASTE

Sorrells retires October 18th

Madison, Indiana (September 25, 2024) – The City of Madison is pleased to officially welcome Chris Hale as the new Director of Streets, Facilities and Solid Waste, who started in his role on September 18, 2024. Hale takes over from longtime Street Superintendent Tony Sorrells, who will retire on October 18, 2024. Sorrells, who has been with the city since 2014, has played a key role in beautification efforts, overseeing memorable projects such as the seasonal decor on Main Street and Michigan, as well as supervising numerous city road projects. Though retiring full-time, Sorrells hopes to return to the department in a part-time capacity.

"It's been a privilege to serve Madison these past ten years. I am thankful to Mayor Courtney for the opportunity to be involved in so many exciting projects across the community these last few years.  I am eager to see how Chris will continue to improve and enhance our city. I look forward to returning part-time and staying involved with the city I love," said Sorrells.

Hale brings extensive experience in operations management, engineering, and leadership from his time at Martinrea Industries, Inc., and ILPEA Industries Inc. His experience in process improvement, capital projects and team leadership makes him well-suited to manage Madison’s streets and infrastructure moving forward.

In his new role as Director of Streets, Facilities and Solid Waste, Hale will oversee the planning, design, and maintenance of city infrastructure, facilities, and solid waste operations. His responsibilities include managing road maintenance, solid waste services, and public facility upkeep, as well as overseeing budgets, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. Hale will continue the department's efforts to meet community needs and enhance Madison's infrastructure.

"Tony's dedication to making Madison clean, safe and beautiful will always be appreciated. We're excited to have Chris on board to continue this legacy and bring fresh ideas to the city. His broad experience positions him to ensure the ongoing success of Madison's infrastructure and public works projects," said Madison's Mayor Bob Courtney.

I am excited to join the City of Madison team. As a lifelong resident, I look forward to contributing to its continued renewal. Tony has set a high standard, and I look forward to building on his work to ensure that Madison continues to thrive and that we meet the needs of both residents and visitors," said Hale.
