Secretary of State Releases Primary Election Voter Turnout Report

13 percent of eligible Hoosiers voted in the May 7th municipal primary

INDIANAPOLIS (June 18, 2019) — Secretary of State Connie Lawson announced today that 13 percent of eligible Hoosiers voted in the May 7th municipal primary election. Not all Hoosier voters were eligible to vote in the municipal elections. Only voters who live in a city or town with an election this year or in a school corporation conducting a construction or tax levy referendum were eligible to vote.

The complete 2019 Municipal Primary Election turnout for each county can be viewed online at https://indianaenr.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/site/index.html. The report was compiled by the Indiana Election Division from voter data gathered in 69 of Indiana’s 92 counties. There were 23 counties in Indiana this year that did not have a primary election.

“Congratulations to Martin County and Rush County for posting the highest turnout in the state with 35 percent each,” said Secretary Lawson. “I hope to see more counties have a higher turnout rate this fall. When Hoosier voters are engaged, it benefits the entire state, and I will continue to leverage the resources of my office to ensure fair and accessible elections in every Indiana county.”

Voter registration is now open for the municipal general election, set for Tuesday, November 5, 2019. If a voter voted in a past election and resides at the same address, there is no need to re-register. Voters can verify their registration by visiting www.IndianaVoters.com.
