(Indianapolis, Ind.) – A Scott County man was awarded the Circle of Corydon Award following his acts of heroism and extreme courage that he showed on September 30, 2019, by State Sen. Chris Garten (R-Charlestown).

On his day, a mother and her son were in their vehicle traveling south on Slab Road in Scottsburgm when they swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway and ran off the road into a large pond. Scott Fergison who lived nearby, heard the vehicle go into the pond, and jumped immediately into action to help the two free themselves from the sinking vehicle.

"Scott Fergison's actions that day were beyond exemplary," Garten said. "Without thought, he put multiple lives before his own. When we met, his genuine humility was not lost on me. Thank you, Mr. Fergison, for your kind and heroic spirit, and thank you for choosing action in the face of danger – because of you, a mother, and a son returned home that day. I would also like to recognize the Scott County EMS, Jennings Township Fire Department, and Scott County Sheriff's Office, who all responded swiftly to the accident and performed their duties flawlessly."

Garten also thanked Scott County EMS Deputy Director Devonnia Tscheulin, and her husband, Michael, a firefighter, for their roles as first responders to the scene.

The Circle of Corydon Award is an award given by the Governor of Indiana. Its purpose is to recognize exemplary citizens who have made significant contributions to the betterment of Indiana. The award is one of the highest honors the Governor can bestow upon an Indiana citizen. If you would like to nominate a fellow Hoosier for this award or any other distinction, please contact Sen. Garten's office with the details.
