(Scott, Co.) - Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Corporal Zachary Brown received “Life Saving Award” during the 2024 Indiana Sheriff’s Association Conference.

He was recognized at the annual Indiana Sheriff’s Association (ISA) Conference held in French Lick, Indiana.

On June 30th, 2023, Corporal Brown was on patrol when he overheard a dispatch of a possible house fire in the City of Scottsburg, approximately 1 mile from his location. Corporal Brown immediately responded to the location, discovering heavy smoke coming from the home. He immediately began kicking the locked front door, attempting to awaken any occupants of the residence. After a short time, occupants of the home began exiting through the door, where Corporal Brown escorted them to a safe location away from the burning home.

The family pet was still inside the burning residence. Corporal Brown was able to rescue the family dog after breaking out a window and convincing the scared pooch to join him outside.

When Corporal Brown was asked to talk about his experience, he humbly credited the firefighters on the scene and all others who were there to help, minimizing his involvement. Corporal Brown was lauded by Sheriff Goodin (and the rescued family) for his efforts… “This is another example of what Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies do…Corporal Brown was first on the scene, immediately accessing the situation and taking action to save this family, including their family pet. I am proud of him and all those heroes who serve our county in service to our citizens”.
