(Madison, Ind.) - On Friday, Prince of Peace Catholic Schools released their plan on how they plan to move forward with the rest of the school year.

THE PLAN FOR K – 11th GRADE

Friday, May 15th will be the last day for students K – 11 this 2019 – 2020 school year. This gives us 174 days of instruction. The state is requiring a minimum of 160 days of instruction this year, instead of the standard 180 days. We are not comfortable decreasing our year by 20 days; however, we do feel comfortable with decreasing it by 6 days and those reasons are included in a paragraph below. Please remember that AP, Dual Credit, and Pathway students may have additional requirements to fulfill.

We are canceling Shawe’s semester exams for all students. Teachers may still have tests near the end of the year; however, the exams that usually makeup 20% of a semester grade will not occur. Instead, the Quarter 3 grade will make up 60% of a student’s Semester 2 grade and Quarter 4 grades will make up the other 40% of that grade.

K-8 students need to stay vigilant on their work as the grades from this 4th quarter will be their official grades. Some 8th-grade students and all 9th, 10th and 11th-grade students must be especially vigilant as they are working on classes that are for credit toward graduation requirements. It is our expectation that students can maintain good grades while virtually learning, even though we know that it presents different challenges.

For those students interested in participating in Shawe athletics in the fall, please remember that you must pass at least 6 classes and fail no more than 1 class to be eligible to play. This rule will remain in effect.

Our expectation is that the great majority of students will be passed/promoted to the next grade level. Principals and teachers will have individual discussions with parents when this may be in question with a specific student.

Please continue, as families, to check PowerSchool for missing work and email teachers when you have questions about content or concerns regarding assignments.

OUR PLAN FOR SENIORS

The state superintendent’s office has announced that all seniors will be given credit for any class in which they were enrolled on March 19th, regardless of their performance in that class. We, therefore, have made the minimum grade percentage, for all seniors, 70% for Semester 2 grades ensuring that they will receive at least a D, and thus will receive credit.

With this decreased expectation on seniors and in response to the fact that the lack of face-to-face instruction has hit our senior students the hardest, we have decided that the last day of this 2019 – 2020 school year for seniors will be Friday, May 8th. The exception is AP coursework, ACP coursework, dual enrollment classes, and career pathway courses, all of which may need to continue until May 15th by teacher discretion. AP exams will start the week of May 11th.

We hope that this boon, small though it may be, will help to show our seniors that we understand how especially unfortunate this scenario is for them.

We are working on finalizing a new commencement date for seniors. We do plan on having a live and in-person commencement. This is an important part of growing up and all of our seniors deserve to experience the joy of the moment.

THE REASONING

We very much value instructional time. Therefore, our regular school day is longer than the state minimum requirement and longer than the state average. This helps us to feel good about our curricula while still providing a solid theology curriculum.

Even so, in any given 4th quarter we spend up to 2 weeks on state-required testing. We spend 4-8 days on in-house exams and testing. We spend time honoring our students with Honors Day, scholarship programs, and other recognitions. We also spend valuable time enriching our environment with class get-togethers, field trips, field days, Shawe games, school Masses, and pep rallies. All of these events are either required by the state or deemed culturally important by us at the school. They also take up a lot of instructional time.

When we took those days into account and depending on what grade level we looked at, we saw that most of our students lose between 6 to 10 days of solid and uninterrupted instructional time between March 19th and the end of the year. This is normal in Indiana schools most years, but this year those events are not happening in the traditional sense.

Knowing this, and knowing that Virtual Learning can be a hardship on our parents, we have decided to take 6 of those days and place them at the end of the year as non-instructional days. This allows us to feel good about our instructional time while also moving our end date up to May 15th.

REGISTRATION

Please note while we are all focused on what is happening now, we also are looking to next year. With the financial hardship this has had on the schools and on our families, registration this year is ever important. We use the registration to determine staffing, course offerings, and extra programs for the following year. We are extending our registration deadline by not increasing our registration fee for families who register late, but please

register soon. This year, more than ever, we need to know what our future holds and your registering is a big part of that for us here at Prince of Peace Schools. Please register online by going directly to this link: https://popeaceschools.org/2020-2021-registration/
