(Carrollton, Ky.) - The Carroll County School District’s plans for Distance Learning to start the school year on Aug. 26 remain unchanged. At its July meeting, the Carroll County Board of Education approved Superintendent Danny Osborne's recommendation to hold classes under a Distance Learning model for the first nine weeks. At the earliest, in-person classes will resume in late October for Carroll County School District students.
“Gov. Beshear asked all school districts to delay the start of in-person classes until at least Sept. 28,” Osborne said. “The Governor’s request does not affect us here in Carroll County since we have already pushed our in-person start date beyond that point. The beginning of our school year remains Wednesday, August 26 via Distance Learning.”
For the 2020-2021 school year, Carroll County School District students have the option to enroll under two models:
In-Person / Distance Learning: Students attend classes in-person when allowed by the school district. When in-person classes are not allowed, students participate in Distance Learning primarily through Google Classroom. Students who plan to attend in-person instruction will start the school year using Distance Learning. At the end of the first nine weeks, the plan is to begin in-person instruction. At any time during the school year when students are attending in-person instruction, they might have to move to Distance Learning if it is determined that in-person instruction is not safe.
Virtual School: The Virtual School option is for students who do not plan to attend in-person classes at any point for at least the first semester. Additional information about the start of Virtual School on Aug. 26 will be released in the coming weeks.
The approved 2020-2021 school calendar — available at carroll.kyschools.us — is similar to last year’s calendar: fall, Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks are intact. The scheduled last day for students is May 26, 2021.
“This is a very fluid situation,” Osborne said. “Our goal of creating a safe and healthy environment for our students and teachers to work and learn in, while still meeting the needs of the whole child — socially, emotionally, developmentally and academically — remains the same. Fortunately, our board members were proactive in getting in front of this recommendation, which provided us the necessary time to create an effective plan to address these needs through Distance Learning or Virtual School.”
