Turned off of the roadway and into the front grassy yard of a residence almost hitting a tree.

On October 21st 2018 Scott Co. Sheriff Department Sergeant James Ward initiated a traffic stop on a black Chevy truck due to the vehicle failing to stop at a red light at Main Street and SR 56.

Sergeant Ward activated his emergency lights near the Scottsburg City Hall on N. Main Street the vehicle failed to stop for emergency lights and sirens.

The vehicle continued North on Main Street however was traveling at a slow rate of speed around 15-20mph. The vehicle then failed to stop at the stop sign at Main and Owen and turned East on Owen Street.

As the vehicle approached the intersection of Owen and 2nd the vehicle then suddenly turned off of the roadway and into the front grassy yard of a residence almost hitting a tree.

The Driver of the vehicle was identified as Mathew Smith of Scottsburg.

After submitting to a chemical breath test it was learned that Mr. Smith had a breath alcohol content of 0.259 which is 3 times the legal limit. Mr. Smith was then placed into custody for Operating under the influence counts 1 & 2, and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle.
