(Madison, Ind.) - The month of February was officially named Black History in the Month in The City of Madison by Mayor Bob Courtney.

Mayor Courtney presented the proclamation to the members of the Human Relations month yesterday at the City Council meeting.

Black History became a month-long celebration in 1976 and now in 2020, the City of Madison has a proclamation making this month Black History Month in our city.

Madison was home to Broadway school the first commission school were people of color could attend. The county was the first to have a college in Indiana where people of color could attend.

Mayor Courtney in the proclamation said,

“Black History Month is a time for citizens of our city, our state, and our country to reflect on diverse history and teachings of African Americans and honor their progress and achievements made throughout the world and whereas Madison was a hub to the underground railroad movement due to its location on the Ohio River.”

The city has continued to appreciate and honor the contributions of the black community in various ways such as the naming of Humes Way in 2012.

“I encourage all Madison residents to join me in celebrating and reflecting on the creativity, culture, traditions, and importance of African Americans in our history,” says Mayor Courtney.
