North Vernon Officers investigate accidental shooting

Subject was manipulating the firearm it fired

On Thursday, June 14th, 2018, shortly before 6:00 PM, officers from the North Vernon Police Department were called to the emergency room of St. Vincent Jennings Hospital because a shooting victim had just arrived.

Officers arrived and began investigating the incident. The lead investigator, Detective Ivory Sandefur interviewed the involved persons and determined the shooting was accidental. Detective Sandefur reported that the incident occurred in the 400 block of North Elm Street. He went on to say that Joshua L. Wray, 26, of North Vernon, stated that he was manipulating a newly purchased Smith and Wesson .40 caliber handgun. The shooting victim, Michael J. Davenport, 19, of Paris Crossing, was sitting next to Mr. Wray. As Mr. Wray was manipulating the firearm it fired. He shot struck Mr. Davenport in the left cheek and exited the right cheek.

Mr. Davenport was stabilized at St. Vincent Jennings ER and then flown via air ambulance to St. Vincent Indianapolis.
