(Madison, Ind.) - A brief public hearing was conducted during the Madison City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 4, the hearing the city discussed how they will appropriate money collected through the tax levies.

One topic of discussion was a ten percent increase for the Madison Police Department, Mayor Courtney has pushed for this since coming into office.

With this increase, Courtney is proposing a $2,600 pay increase for the officers starting with bi-weekly payments of $200 beginning July 3, 2020. Over the year this would equate to $81,000.

“This pay increase will help retain officers who might otherwise be recruited away. It will also elevate the city’s police compensation to a level consistent and competitive with other communities,” said Mayor Courtney.

There will also be other positions coming to the city, chief of staff Mindy McGee gave the council brief summary of the salary range for each position that was requested from the tax money.

The range of salary for Chief of Staff will be set at $31,200 to $51,890; Economic Development Executive Director $39,000 to $45,000; Economic Development Assistant $25,272 to $35,000; Planning/Preservation Assistant $28,000 to $40,000, and Airport Assistant Manager $20,000 to $32,000.

It was also announced by McGee that the Office of Planning will have the spot of a Preservationist open. This spot will be fully funded by INDOT for two years at $40,000.
