Goal is to create safe learning environments
In an effort to prevent, or intercept (if necessary), any drug-related activity on our campus, the Madison City Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department brought K9 officers to conduct a scheduled multi-agency K9 sweep of the high school campus this morning. Six K9 officers and their handlers conducted a search of the parking lot and building.
This is part of our ever-expanding, ongoing district safety initiative. Overall, at the high school we have seen a decrease in the number of safety-related offenses from last year to date this year. First-semester high school data shows drugs/controlled substances (-3), theft/attempted theft (-6), tobacco (-2), and threats to students (-8) have dropped from last year. “We are still higher than we would like to be,” shared district Safety director, Officer Jacob McVey. “Our schools are really focusing on building relationships with students, understanding the external factors that lead to behaviors, and working with students to understand how to work through challenges and big emotions. Today’s work with our partnering agencies, along with the daily work of our SROs on each campus, conveys our commitment to campus safety. Our goal is to create safe learning environments and provide additional resources and support, as necessary, for specific situations.”
