He has been with the department for 22 years
After 22 years of service to the City of Madison, Major Jeremey Perkins has announced his retirement from the Madison Police Department (MPD). During his time with the department, Major Perkins has held the positions of patrol captain, detective, assistant chief, and chief of police. Major Perkins has also served as a certified negotiator for the MPD/JCSO Emergency Response Team. As a negotiator, he earned two separate lifesaving awards and a Medal of Valor for his work in negotiating with suicidal persons. Major Perkins has also de-escalated multiple police stand-offs, successfully talking barricaded subjects into custody.
Major Perkins was also known for his work in Crimes against Children cases as a detective, making numerous arrests in cases involving child abuse, child neglect, and sex crimes against children. During his tenure as assistant chief and chief of police and in collaboration with Chief John Wallace, Major Perkins oversaw the expansion of the Police Department from an agency with less than 30 officers and six patrol vehicles to an agency of 34 officers with take-home cars, each equipped with a mobile computer-aided dispatch station.
Awards and accomplishments aside, Major Perkins is known for his excellent attitude in dealing with the day-to-day operations of the Madison Police Department. Although eager to join his wife in Florida, Major Perkins has graciously agreed to extend his stay with MPD to assist in the transition of Chief Shawn Scudder and Major Rick Mundt.
Major Perkins says, “I am proud to have dedicated my career to the citizens of Madison, which I will always consider my home. I am excited for the next chapter of my life as I begin a new career in Florida. I am honored to have served with many amazing officers over my career and will miss them greatly.”
“I am grateful for Major Perkins' contributions to MPD and the safety of our community. His career accomplishments are many. It has been a pleasure working with Jeremey and I wish him the best,” says Mayor Bob Courtney.
