Madison Municipal Airport Takes Flight with Regional Airport Status

Officially upgraded to Regional Airport status by the FAA,

Madison, IN – The Madison Municipal Airport is thrilled to announce its official upgrade to Regional Airport status by the FAA, a prestigious designation that places it among only 19 Regional Airports in Indiana. This recognition is part of the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS), a program designed by the FAA to enhance the development, connectivity, and safety of public-use airports across the nation.

Brent Spry, Airport Director, expressed his pride and gratitude: “The timing couldn’t be better as this upgrade will save hundreds of thousands of dollars locally. This achievement reflects years of dedication, strategic growth, and the hard work of our team and aviation partners. Most importantly, it’s a testament to the strength of our extraordinary aviation community. Without their passion and support, none of this would be possible. Madison is growing, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to maintaining modern, industry-leading operations at the airport. I am deeply honored to work with such an exceptional team and a vibrant airport community—our shared passion shines through in every milestone we reach.”

Regional Status: A Reflection of Madison’s Growth

Madison Municipal Airport’s new Regional status underscores its vital role as a gateway for Madison and the surrounding areas. In addition to serving the City of Madison, the airport is the closest aviation hub for communities such as Carrollton, Milton, Hanover, and neighboring counties. This upgraded status better reflects the broader region the airport supports, connecting local communities to regional and national opportunities.

Partnerships with the City of Madison, Jefferson County, and surrounding communities continue to drive the airport’s growth, enabling it to remain a cornerstone of transportation and economic development for the area.

Soaring to New Heights

The airport’s Regional designation marks the beginning of a new chapter in its legacy. Upcoming initiatives include:

Runway Reconstruction: A major runway reconstruction project is planned within the next two years, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

Expanded Hangar Capacity: Plans for additional hangars will address increasing demand, attract more based aircraft, and support long-term growth.

Comprehensive Master Plan: A new Airport Master Plan will guide the airport’s development, ensuring it meets the needs of the modern aviation landscape.

Spry emphasized the importance of collaboration moving forward: “This is an exciting time for Madison Municipal Airport. We are eager to work closely with the City of Madison to capitalize on this momentum and achieve our shared vision for the future. Continued support will be instrumental in sustaining our growth and cementing our role as a key asset for the region.”

Thank You to Our Aviation Community

The Madison Municipal Airport extends its deepest appreciation to the aviation community and the businesses that make up its vibrant ecosystem. “Your loyalty and commitment are the foundation of our success,” Spry added. With 38 hangars, 55 based aircraft, and 8 thriving businesses, including aircraft maintenance, aircraft restoration, a flight school, and a medical helicopter service, the airport serves as a dynamic hub for the region’s aviation needs.
