MADISON MAN ARRESTED ON CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER

Stabbing at the Victoria Inn,

On May 3, 2019, the Madison Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at the Victoria Inn, located at 801 E. Main Street. Officers from the Madison Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office located a twenty-two year old male with several stab wounds to his abdomen.

Through the course of the investigation, Madison Police Department detectives were able to identify the suspect as Joseph Newcome, age 33 of Madison. Officers with the Madison Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, and Indiana State Police searched for Newcome, who was ultimately located near a fast food restaurant in the Madison Hilltop area. Joseph was arrested and questioned by detectives from Madison Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, before being booked on the preliminary charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury. Newcome was listed as homeless at the time of his arrest.

The victim was in stable condition at the time of this press release, but sustained life threatening injuries. More details will be released as the case progresses. The case was lead by Madison Police Department Detectives Ricky Harris and Kyle Cutshaw. The Madison Police Department would like to thank Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Thomas, Chief Deputy John Wallace, Detective Denning, Deputies Armstrong and Spry, and SRO Jacob McVey. The Madison Police Department would also like to thank Indiana State Police Sgt. Adam Bullock, and Crime Scene Technician Martin Mead. The rapid response of all agencies involved helped bring this case to a close within hours of the initial call.
