Madison City Council Hold First Reading Of New Ordinance Which Establishes Deputy Mayor

The position of deputy mayor will allow for the city to have a seamless transition if there were to be an emergency to arise.

(Madison, Ind.) - On Tuesday, the City of Madison City Council heard the first reading of a new ordinance that will allow Mayor Courtney to appoint a  member of his staff as deputy mayor.

The role of the deputy mayor is to step in and exercise the roles and responsibilities of Mayor Courtney if he is not able to do so.

The position of deputy mayor will allow for the city to have a seamless transition if there were to be an emergency to arise. If the deputy mayor does take over the position, they will serve for 15 days before action would be necessary, giving the city enough time to weigh their options of what will happen next.

This ordinance came with a second ordinance that will allow for the position of Chief of Staff to be redefined to include deputy mayor. These two ordinances will be on the agenda for a second reading for the council meeting on December 22.
