(Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Indiana House of Representatives has recently voted unanimously on legislation grating surviving spouses the ability to obtain a Purple Heart license plate in honor of their loved ones, according to state Reps. Ryan Lauer (R-Columbus) and Jim Lucas (R-Seymour).

"This bill is another example of working to honor our Hoosier heroes and their loved ones. These heroes have earned one of our military's highest awards and deserve to be recognized for their service and sacrifice," Lauer said. "This is common-sense legislation, and it is a privilege to support our veterans and their families."

Under current legislation, Purple Heart recipients who have the specialty license plate can request multiple plates for vehicles registered under his or her name, which could include a spouse’s vehicle.

However, when the veteran passes away, the spouse cannot renew the Purple Heart plate.

"This is a simple fix that will allow loved ones to continue honoring and remembering our veterans who sacrificed so much for our country," Lucas said. "As a veteran, extending this opportunity to eligible spouses is the right thing to do."

Eligible recipients are required to fill out an application and include documentation of the award of the Purple Heart Medal before submitting it to the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs.
