Leaving the scene accident involving pedestrian leads to speedy arrest

The subject was flown by helicopter to St. Vincent in Indianapolis for her injuries

On February 21, 2019 at 7:49 AM, Officers of the North Vernon Police Department were dispatched to a personal injury accident on College Street. Officers were advised that a female pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle and that the driver had fled the scene.

 

Officers arrived quickly and saw that the 26 year old female that was struck by the vehicle had been dragged several feet. The female’s injuries were treated by EMS while officers began searching for the suspect vehicle.


The female was flown by helicopter to St. Vincent in Indianapolis for her injuries. Her condition is not known at this time.

 

During the investigation, officers were able to locate a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect vehicle on West Walnut. Officers were also able to locate the driver of the vehicle.

 

The driver of the vehicle that left the scene was identified as Stephen A. Vaughan, 21, of North Vernon. Stephen was interviewed by police and taken to the Jennings St. Vincent hospital for a blood draw.

 

Stephen was arrested by the North Vernon Police Department and charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Level 6 Felony. His bond is currently set at $1055.

 

The North Vernon Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office and Jennings County EMS.

 

All suspects charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
