Late Evening Shooting Claims the Life of a Salem Man

Case will ultimately be turned over to the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office

Washington County – According to detectives, at approximately 6:32 PM on August 7, 2023, Washington County 911 received a phone call regarding a shooting at 7783 S. Organ Springs Road in Salem.  Washington County Sheriff’s Department responded and found that Michael T. Chastain had been shot in the front yard of that address.  The investigation yielded that Michael Chastain showed up at that address and drove through the front yard.  He ultimately exited his vehicle and grabbed the homeowner and forced him to the ground.  Chastain then pulled a weapon and pointed it at the homeowner’s head.  The homeowner’s wife noticed this from inside the residence.  She then grabbed her handgun and exited the house and ultimately shot Chastain.  Chastain was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital in Salem where he was pronounced dead. Chastain’s family has already been notified.
