(Madison, Ind.) – It is with much sadness, and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of one of our residents that the Jefferson County Health Department announces its first death as a result of COVID-19.

The patient was an adult who had been hospitalized as a COVID-19 patient from the time of diagnosis until their death.

The health department would like to stress that this disease is still prevalent. Positive cases continue to be reported steadily, and this death should serve as a grim reminder of the severity of the disease.

We urge you to continue to follow the guidance and recommendations related to masking, social distancing, group gatherings, hand hygiene, and general disinfection, so that we have the best possible chance for preventing another tragedy, like this one, from happening in our wonderful community.
