House approves Zimmerman's resolution to rename local bridge after North Vernon Marine

He was killed in 2017

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 29, 2025) – The Indiana House unanimously approved State Rep. Alex Zimmerman's (R-North Vernon) resolution to rename a State Road 7 bridge after North Vernon native and Marine Lance Cpl. Jacky Koenig Jr.

Koenig died during a training exercise on April 9, 2017, while deployed in Okinawa, Japan, where he served as a member of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267. Zimmerman's resolution urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the State Road 7 bridge over the Vernon Fork of the Muscatatuck River after Koenig.

"Jacky exemplified selflessness, dedication and leadership," Zimmerman said. "It is a great tragedy for the family and community to have lost such an exceptional Hoosier, but I hope this memorial could help remind residents of House District 67 of what a role model he was and still is to North Vernon."

Koenig enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps. in 2014 after graduating from Jennings County High School. In 2017, he was promoted to lance corporal. Koenig received the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon for his service.

Zimmerman said Koenig grew up in North Vernon where he volunteered regularly to help remove litter from the Muscatatuck River and ran along its banks as a member of the Jennings County High School cross country team.

House Concurrent Resolution 7 now moves to the Senate for consideration. To learn more about the resolution and follow session, visit iga.in.gov.
