To receive the handheld metal detectors or wands by mid-August, districts needed to apply by July 19. Districts that apply beyond that deadline will receive theirs sometime in the fall.
More than half of Indiana's public school districts have already requested handheld metal detectors through a new state program that will offer the devices to schools for free.
Gov. Eric Holcomb's office announced last week a new initiative to provide handheld metal detectors to all schools that want them.
All traditional public, charter and accredited non-public schools will be eligible for one device for every 250 students enrolled. The Indiana State Police and Department of Administration will coordinate the program and place the first order later this week.
The devices are expected to be delivered mid-August, just after most districts start the new school year.
The new program comes after a student was accused of bringing two guns into Noblesville West Middle School and opening fire in a science classroom May 25.
Schools can learn more and make their request at the IDOA website.
Here's every public school district, charter school and private school that has requested metal detectors. Also listed is the number of devices each has requested: (As of July 16th)
