Governor Signs Bill Legalizing CBD Oil For Everyone In Indiana

It’s now legal for anyone to have CBD oil in the state of Indiana.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – It’s now legal for anyone to have CBD oil in the state of Indiana.

Governor Eric Holcomb signed the cannabidiol legalization measure, Senate Enrolled Act 52, into law this week. The hemp extract can help people who suffer from seizures, epilepsy or chronic pain by making symptoms less severe or frequent.

Holcomb said lawmakers delivered a bill that ensures Hoosiers who benefit from CBD oil can access it.

“The bill provides much needed clarity, with labeling requirements and a 0.3% THC limit on CBD products. I’m grateful for the General Assembly’s hard work to bring me a bill to address the needs expressed by our citizens,” he said.

THC is the chemical in marijuana that gets users high, but the amount of it in CBD oil is negligible.

The law authored by State Sen. R. Michael Young (R-Indianapolis) establishes testing, packaging, and labeling requirements for the distribution and retail sale of the substance.

“So many people have benefited from using CBD oil to treat a variety of problems like epilepsy, cancer and anxiety,” Young said. “Since we are limiting how much THC can be in the product, there is no risk for people to use this to get high. My hope with this bill is that more Hoosiers will be able to use this product to treat their ailments.”

A law passed in 2017 made it legal for people with a form of epilepsy to use it, but only if they were on a registry. However, the law did not create a legal way for individuals to purchase it. Indiana State Excise Police confiscated CBD oil from nearly 60 stores across the state last year.

SEA 52 goes into effect immediately, allowing everyone in the state to use it without penalty.
