Case remains under full investigation
Authorities in Carroll County are investigating the death of a 26-year-old Madison, Indiana, woman whose body was found near the intersection of KY 36 and Hampton Lane Thursday, April 17.
Emily Elizabeth Proctor had been missing since Sunday, April 13, when she got out of a car operated by a family member and ran into a wooded area near where her body was later found, A search was conducted after her disappearance but nobody had seen her until her body was found four days later.
Carroll County Coroner is calling this case a “death investigation” with no cause of death established at this time pending toxicology reports. The Coroner is investigating the case with the sheriff’s office and has ruled out the indication of foul play.
What is known is that Proctor disappeared while traveling from Madison to Florence, Indiana, as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a family member on KY 36 in Carroll County — most likely because State Road 56 is currently closed to traffic in Indiana. At some point on that drive, she became agitated by the conversation and got out of the vehicle and ran into the woods at Hampton Lane. A search for her in the hours after the disappearance was unsuccessful and nobody had seen her alive since then.
Authories have no idea what happened at this point and are awaiting autopsy results
The incident was not the first time Proctor had gone missing. She was the focus of a widespread missing persons case in July 2024 when she was gone for several weeks from Switzerland County, Indiana, before being located in Texas. Apparently there have been other disappearances as well.
