An Incident lead to resignation of Fire Chief Ken Washer
Madison, Indiana (August 15, 2024) –The City of Madison’s Mayor Bob Courtney has recommended Bill DeVries as Interim Fire Chief to Board of Public Works and Safety. DeVries, who currently serves as the City Fire Marshal, is a seasoned veteran of the Madison Fire Department and previously held the position of Fire Chief. He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the role.
“Bill DeVries is a proven leader with a deep commitment to our community. His extensive knowledge and experience will ensure that the Madison Fire Department continues to operate at the highest level during this transition period,” said Madison’s Mayor Bob Courtney.
Chief DeVries has over 19 years of experience in fire service, including his prior tenure as Fire Chief, where he was instrumental in advancing fire safety initiatives and enhancing the department’s training programs.
“This department and our community mean a great deal to me,” said Interim Chief DeVries. “I’m honored to step back into this role and work alongside the dedicated men and women of the Madison Fire Department to keep our city safe.”
This recommendation follows the resignation of Chief Ken Washer, who served the city for 17 years. The city will begin the search for a permanent fire chief immediately. In the meantime, Chief DeVries will work closely with department personnel to ensure the department remains fully prepared to serve the residents of Madison.
Washer’s resignation comes after the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department was asked by Madison Police to investigate an alleged incident of inappropriate behavior by Washer to a female resident while conducting his duties with the street department.
During the course of that investigation the alleged victim and others were interviewed, including Washer, and on Tuesday, Aug. 13, the case was handed over to the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office and a criminal summons was issued for Washer to appear at an initial hearing at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, where he is facing a charge of Battery, a Class B misdemeanor.
