City of Madison Announces Main Street Open House

Long-term Main Street re-envisioning project

Madison, Indiana (October 26, 2021) — Today, the City of Madison announced plans to host an open house for the long-term Main Street re-envisioning project. The open house is scheduled for Monday, November 15th, from 5-8 p.m. at the Brown Gym, 100 Broadway Street Madison, IN 47250. The event is hosted by the City of Madison Office of Planning, Preservation, and Design, Ratio, the design consultant for the project, and Jacobi Toombs and Lanz, the project engineers. Representatives from the city, the Main Street Steering Committee, and the design team will be in attendance. Results generated during the open house will assist city leaders and designers in making decisions regarding the redesign and long-term plans for Main Street. The open house will begin with a brief presentation. The presentation will help familiarize attendees with the process thus far. Information shared will include site analysis, Steering Committee meetings, traffic engineering studies, and temporary “tactical urbanism” measures that use short-term, low-cost interventions to demonstrate how reducing traffic lanes might affect overall traffic flow. Following the presentation, attendees are invited to visit a series of “stations” available to view project graphics and respond to specific issues that the design team, Steering Committee, and stakeholders have identified as items for additional feedback. Each of these stations will be attended by a member of the design team or the Steering Committee to help answer questions. Stations will include the following topics: • Resident & visitor reaction to the temporary lane reduction between Broadway and Cragmont • The inclusion and preferred location of multi-modal transportation lanes • The public’s input on the appropriate balance of the overall cost of the project – the “invisible” (i.e., infrastructure improvements) vs. the “visible” (decorative pavement, site furnishings, lighting, etc. “Main Street is so much more to our community than just the movement of vehicle traffic. Over time and with community involvement, we will elevate the potential this area has dramatically. We look forward to the future of Madison’s Main Street and hope you will join us for this open house,” said Madison’s Mayor, Bob Courtney
