(Madison, Ind.) - From the Office of Mayor Courtney:

Assistant Chief of Police, Ben McKay, was named the interim chief of police for the City of Madison Police Department, effective Jan. 20, 2020.

McKay has been a member of the Madison Police Department for 16 years and has served as the assistant chief of police for nearly three years. After being hired in 2004 as a patrolman, he worked to advance his career and eventually earned the rank of sergeant before being named assistant chief of police. In addition to serving the community here in Madison, McKay has served as the Commander for the countywide SWAT team for 10 years.

“Community safety is our top priority. I am grateful to Chief McKay for accepting this interim position and the leadership he exhibits for our community. I look forward to working with Chief McKay on our key initiatives,” said Mayor Courtney.

A city’s police chief can have an immense effect on the safety and security of a community as well as the overall quality of life. This is an important decision for the City of Madison and much consideration is being taken as the mayor continues to work through the selection process. Approximately 65 applications for Chief of Police were received. McKay will serve as chief until the mayor and the selection committee make a permanent appointment to the position.
