(Madison, Ind.) – On August 4, 2008, Jon Menke paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving his country.
Each year, the City of Madison honors men and women who have served our country through the Jon Menke Award for Military Service.
This year’s honorees are Don and Mary Law Bullock.
During World War II, over 150 thousand women served in the Women’s Army Core, one of those women was Mary Bullock.
In February of 1945, Mary enlisted into the United States Army, when she then attended medical technical school in Georgia.
Mary went on to serve in the Women’s Army Core for two years.
Don Bullock enlisted into the United States Navy at 17 years old, during his time of service Don was awarded many awards, including the Presidential Unit Citation, which is given for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.
Don’s destroyer was awarded 7 major battle stars and destroyed twenty-one Japanese Kamikaze Suicide Planes.

During the award ceremony at Tuesday’s Council Meeting, Mary was also given a United States flag that was flown at the Indiana State House, for “grateful recognition for military service in World War II.” The flag was presented by Indiana State Representative Randy Frye.
