City, County Awarded Infrastructure Improvement Grant

For this latest round of funding, rural communities will design, develop, and purchase land for projects.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Indiana Department of Transportation announced today that $100.8 million in federal transportation funding is being awarded to 54 cities, towns, and counties in rural portions of Indiana to invest in local road and bridge improvements as well as sidewalk and trail projects.

Locally, the City of Madison received $3,872,000 for the maintenance of Main Street. Jefferson County was also a recipient receiving $1,240,800.

"We are grateful for the continued support from INDOT with this federal highway grant. We put together a very comprehensive plan to make over $5 million in improvements to the diversified corridor that spans 4.4 miles from Jefferson Street to the top of Hanover Hill. With the input from our design professionals and steering committee, we intend to calm traffic, improve pedestrian safety, promote economic development, and enhance the quality of life and place for all. Deputy Mayor McGee, along with Street Superintendent Tony Sorrells and his team, worked hard to bring this phase to fruition and build upon mayor Armstrong's success with the new bridge and Mayor Welch with the new bridge approach," said Mayor Bob Courtney.

For this latest round of funding, rural communities will design, develop, and purchase land for projects that would be bid during the fiscal year beginning July 2025. While the funds awarded now are dedicated to construction, INDOT will be financially participating in the design, engineering, and right of way acquisition component of these projects.
