Backpack To Go Into Your Locker

Trimble Co. Schools

In early June there were two trainings held for Trimble County staff. These trainings were conducted by Deputy Lonnie Gullion and Deputy Tim Wakefield from the Trimble County Sheriffs Department.

One of the recommendations that was made by the law enforcement officials conducting this training was that there should be a limitation on bringing backpacks into classrooms. This does not mean that backpacks are not allowed in the school, just that they must go into the student’s locker when they get to school. There are a couple of reasons for this added safety measure. The first is that it does make it a little more difficult for someone who may bring a weapon to get it into the classroom. While we know that a student may still do so or that a student may still bring a weapon regardless, it adds another level of protection. Unfortunately we live in times were we must sometimes be inconvenienced to be safe. It is better to be SAFE than sorry or inconvenienced.

Another reason for this added measure is to keep the backpacks from taking up space in the classrooms. In the event of an evacuation they can be trip hazards. Again this is an additional safety measure being put in place at the recommendation of Law Enforcement. In the unfortunate event that we ever have an incident of school shooting, which hopefully will never occur, we will not be looking back in hindsight saying “why did we not do everything we could do to keep students safe.” It may be inconvenient but at the end of each day when your child walks through your door alive, safe, and sound then we, as a school district, have met our first and most important priority.
