Attempted Traffic Stop Leads To Pursuit, Discovery of Stolen Motorcycle

After pursuing the motorcycle for a short time and reaching speeds exceeding 110 mph, Deputy Mellencamp terminated the pursuit for the safety of the driver.

(Jennings County, Ind.) – On Wednesday, May 20, Deputy Thomas Mellencamp was on routine patrol on Highway 50 near State Road 3 when he attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle for a traffic infraction.

The motorcycle accelerated at a high rate of speed and began to flee from Deputy Mellencamp, after pursuing the motorcycle for a short time and reaching speeds exceeding 110 mph, Deputy Mellencamp terminated the pursuit for the safety of the driver.

Deputies lost sight of the motorcycle going into Butlerville but stayed in the area to look for the motorcycle, while searching deputies located David E. Turner, 40, of Butlerville walking through a yard.

Sgt. Cody Low located a motorcycle parked in a driveway on Washington Street near the area where they observed Turner walking. The motorcycle was still warm to the touch and was later determined to be stolen out of Indianapolis.

After further investigation the key for the motorcycle was in Turner’s pocket. Turner was taken into custody and transported to the Jennings County Jail on the charges of resisting law enforcement (level 6 felony), and possession of stolen property (level 6 felony).
