College sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors
STATEHOUSE (Oct. 25, 2023) – Southeast Indiana lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates to apply online for an internship at the Indiana Statehouse before the Oct. 31 deadline.
The House of Representatives offers paid spring internships to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns will receive $900 biweekly while working at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis during the 2024 legislative session, which begins in January and concludes mid-March.
State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon) said interested Hoosiers should visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and complete the application before Oct. 31.
"As a former intern, I know firsthand what an amazing experience this can be for Hoosiers who want to put their classroom skills to work," Zimmerman said. "With the deadline fast approaching, I encourage Southeast Indiana students to take time and apply today."
Positions are available in legislative operations where interns work directly with constituents and help track committee activity. The communications department is looking for interns to help write press releases and email newsletters, and work with social media, graphic design and audio/video production. The policy department is also in need of interns to help research, track and analyze legislation.
"Making business connections is an important steppingstone for anyone looking to launch their career," said State Rep. Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville). "By interning at the Statehouse, young Hoosiers can meet and network with leaders and employers from across the state."
"Intern positions are open to students with different backgrounds and varying interests," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "As interns work with members of the media, help constituents or research different topics, they will build their confidence, develop new skills and add to their portfolio of work."
Internships are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"This is a great chance for any student looking to get ahead in the competitive job market," said State Rep. Randy Lyness (R-West Harrison). "Those who go through this program walk away with a unique experience and plenty to put on their resumes."
"Regardless of what a student's career interests are, this program can be a great step toward working in either the public or private sector," said State Rep. Karen Engleman (R-Georgetown). "No one should miss out on this amazing opportunity, so apply today."
"Students need some professional experiences outside of the classroom so that they are better prepared for the workforce and stand out in the application process," said State Rep. Zach Payne (R-Charlestown). "It's very easy to apply online and interviews are happening right now, so don't miss out on the chance to work at the Statehouse and be a part of the legislative process."
