(Indianapolis, Ind.) - American Red Cross will be hosting a virtual training course for those interested in disaster response amid coronavirus concerns.

“Zero to Hero” is a free weekend training program for new and existing volunteers preparing them to be a Red Cross Disaster Action Team member. DAT members respond to community crises such as home fires or natural disasters. Members also assist and guide victims while providing them with resources for recovery.

Some of the content the course will cover is Psychological First Aid and Mass Care.

The “Zero to Hero” program helps volunteers with “zero” training become a Red Cross Disaster Action Team “hero.”

The content of this training course, which includes both instructors- and video- led courses are usually covered in a six-week period, but the Red Cross has created a fast- track program to allow for more volunteers to be certified and ready to respond to communities in need.

These classes will be offered virtually through Zoom. If you are interested you are asked to register by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27 by clicking here. The classes will be held on Saturday, March 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET and Sunday, March, 29 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.

The Indiana Region has pivoted in how the organization responds during coronavirus concerns to support vital services by moving normally in-person training to virtual training.

There are immediate needs for volunteers to support their communities, participants can register at the event as a new volunteer and receive basic skills training to respond to local disasters, such as a fire.
