delve into different techniques
In this introduction to watercolor painting 11-week course (10 lessons plus an Art Show session for the
Finale on September 23) we’ll unlock the basics of transparent watercolor painting. We’ll learn about materials and tools, how to stretch paper, and how to achieve smooth and graded washes. This is a versatile medium, and we’ll delve into different techniques: wet-into-wet, glazing, blending, dry brush; masks and resists; and various special effects. We’ll examine the basics of picture making, including composition and mark making, values and color, thumbnail layouts. Perspective and basic drawing skills will be touched upon, as needed. We’ll explore various subjects, including portraiture (human and animal), still life, landscape, and copying the masters. In a departure from recent art classes at the Library, this will be a demonstration-heavy class, with the instructor painting alongside you.
Independent-minded students who wish to continue projects from previous art courses at the Library, or
those who wish to paint, draw, or craft in the company of other artists on personal projects or in other
media are also welcome to attend, and the instructor will be available to coach, tutor, and respond to
those participants as well. Bring your own supplies; see supply list attached to the class description at mjcpl.org/events Instructor Russell Vossler. Registration required. Adult and Young Adult.
